Bhutan cultural highlights including Paro, Thimphu, and Punakha

Overview

A 7-day itinerary is ideal for first-time visitors to Bhutan. It allows enough time to explore the country’s cultural heartland while maintaining a relaxed pace that aligns with Bhutan’s mindful approach to travel.

This itinerary focuses on Bhutan’s most iconic destinations—Paro, Thimphu, and Punakha— blending monasteries, dzongs, scenic landscapes, and cultural experiences.

Day 1: Arrival in Paro

Arrive at Paro International Airport and meet your guide. After check-in, enjoy a gentle acclimatization walk through Paro town and visit a local monastery or traditional farmhouse.

Day 2: Paro Highlights

Explore Paro’s cultural landmarks, including the National Museum and Rinpung Dzong. The afternoon is perfect for a scenic valley walk or a visit to Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest temples.

Day 3: Hike to Tiger’s Nest Monastery

Today’s highlight is the hike to Tiger’s Nest Monastery (Paro Taktsang), Bhutan’s most iconic site. The hike takes approximately 4–6 hours roundtrip and offers breathtaking valley views.

Day 4: Paro to Thimphu

Drive to Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital. Visit the Buddha Dordenma statue, Memorial Chorten, and local craft markets. Thimphu offers a unique blend of tradition and modern life.

Day 5: Thimphu to Punakha

Cross the scenic Dochula Pass, known for its panoramic Himalayan views. Continue to Punakha and visit Punakha Dzong, one of Bhutan’s most beautiful fortresses.

Day 6: Punakha Exploration

Enjoy a relaxed day exploring Punakha Valley, including a walk to Chimi Lhakhang (the Fertility Temple) and optional light hiking or village visits.

Day 7: Return to Paro & Departure

Return to Paro for your departure. Depending on flight timing, enjoy a final cultural stop or souvenir shopping before heading to the airport.

Is 7 Days Enough for Bhutan?

Seven days is perfect for a first visit focused on western and central Bhutan. Travelers with more time may consider extending their trip to include eastern Bhutan or additional trekking experiences.
